Black Friday has set a record for the number of firearms background check requests received by the FBI.

The agency said it processed 185,345 gun background checks on last Friday's big sales event - more than two a second.

FBI background checks are required for gun purchases from nationally-licensed dealers and for permits to carry guns. But a background check does not necessarily mean that a firearm has been bought.

The FBI started processing background checks for potential gun owners in 1998.

The record volume of background checks came on the same day that three people were killed and nine others wounded in a shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado.

US president Barack Obama renewed calls for changes to gun laws to limit access to weapons in the wake of the shootings.
