The US National Hurricane Centre in Miami said the storm has maximum sustained winds of about 85mph and it is expected to strengthen before its centre reaches Bermuda on Thursday, possibly as a Category 2 hurricane.

Bermuda's national security minister Jeff Baron said Nicole poses a serious threat, with possible hurricane-force winds hitting the island starting late on Wednesday.

The Hurricane Centre said Nicole was about 360 miles south-south-west of Bermuda on Tuesday evening and was stationary.

A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda.
