Former US first lady Barbara Bush has been admitted to hospital with a respiratory-related ailment.
Mrs Bush was "in great spirits", getting "fantastic care" and had received visits from her husband and family.
Just last week, Mrs Bush and her husband, the 41st president, honoured a Houston businessman and philanthropist with a Points of Light Award, a voluntary service accolade started by the former president.
Mrs Bush, whose son George was the 43rd president, had a reputation for bluntness when her husband was in office. The Bushes live in Houston.
The Bush family matriarch had surgery in March 2009 for a severe narrowing of the main heart valve and in November 2008 had an operation for a perforated ulcer.
In 2010, she was admitted to hospital after having a mild relapse of Graves disease, a thyroid condition for which she was treated in 1989.
