An Australian hunter has been captured on film punching a kangaroo after the animal locked his pet dog in a headlock.

The video, which was recorded on a hunting trip earlier this year, has gone viral and shows the man saving his dog, before squaring up to the kangaroo and punching it in the head with a right hook.

Australian media have since reported that the man, Greig Tonkins, is a zoo-keeper who has been described as an “animal lover”.

His employer, Taronga Western Plains Zoo, where Mr Tonkins is an elephant keeper has released a statement which says it will consider “appropriate action” when the full incident is clarified.

According to the Daily Mail in Australia the hunting trip was organised to lift the spirits of one of the group who was suffering with cancer.
