A Dalit or 'untouchable' woman was gang-raped in front of her husband and young child after their home was broken into by seven robbers.
The victim suffered serious head injuries in the attack and is being treated in hospital.
The attack in Purbind Nagar village, near Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, is the latest in a series of gang-rapes reported in India since the attack and subsequent death of a 23-year-old student in Delhi provoked protests.
The latest case emerged after a 16-year-old girl who set fire to herself after being raped by youths in Orissa died from her injuries. She had been raped on January 2 and set fire to herself the next day. She was taken to hospital but died on Tuesday.
In the Aligarh attack, the victim's husband said the men had broken into their home at 2.30am as he, his wife and their four-year-old son slept.
They had bound and gagged him. They then hit his wife on the head with a brick after she resisted them and gang-raped her as their son slept. They took 1,380 rupees (€19) in cash and some jewellery.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the attack.
