Whale of a price tag for giant tuna
A MIGHTY bluefin tuna has been sold in Japan for Y16.28 million (€124,000) -- a price no buyer has come close to for nearly a decade.
The 232.6kg (512lb) monster went under the hammer for 60pc more than the most expensive fish sold at auction last year -- a sign that Asia may be putting the financial crisis behind it and descending once again on its high-end sushi bars.
The single tuna could deliver 16,000 slices of the world's most expensive sashimi -- a Japanese delicacy consisting of raw fish, sliced thinly and served with dipping sauce.
The tuna, selected for what its buyers believe will be perfect taste and consistency, was sold to a joint bid from two restaurateurs: the same pair who bought the most expensive tuna in January 2009.
A few hours after the auction, part of the tuna's fatty underbelly was served to diners. (© The Times, London)
