Video: Shoppers showered with sharks as wall of aquarium explodes

TERRIFIED shoppers got no warning when the glass wall of a giant aquarium shattered, spilling several small sharks into a mall.

Sixteen people were injured by flying shards of acrylic glass up to 15 centimetres thick in the accident in Shanghai in China.

None of the fish, turtles or three lemon sharks inside the tank survived.

Safety officials said initial inquiries suggested cold weather was to blame.

"According to experts' preliminary investigation the main cause of the incident is that the material used to make the aquarium ruptured under low temperatures after long-term use," said an official.

Shoppers, shop workers and mall security staff suffered cuts and bruises.

The shopping mall said the two-year-old aquarium had been a popular attraction.
