A MISSING Australian yachtsman has been rescued and brought back to land after his boat was spotted by an Air Canada passenger plane.

Glenn Ey went missing off the coast of Australia when his yacht ran into trouble on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old activated an emergency beacon, triggering a search which involved two international passenger flights.

An Air Canada plane swooped down, and armed with binoculars, the crew and passengers managed to spot the yacht and raise the alarm.

Back on dry land in Sydney, Ey thanked his rescuers and said it was a scary moment when his boat was damaged.

He said: "It's extraordinary, the noise is like an explosion, you upside down, smashing around inside the boat filling up with water. I don't think there is anyone who would deny being concerned and you do think your number's up."

Maritime teams were unable to retrieve Ey's yacht, which has been left drifting at sea.
