A cat that vanished three years ago during Japan's 2011 tsunami disaster has been unexpectedly reunited with its owners.

Suika was thought to have died after disappearing on March 11, 2011 – the day of the earthquake and tsunami – from its home in Ofunato, Iwate prefecture.

Kazuko and Takeo Yamagishi, Suika's owners, spent three months searching for the black cat across the badly damaged city before abandoning any hope that it had survived. The cat was spotted in a neighbouring town nine miles away and taken to the authorities, which tracked down the owners via its collar information.

Although the owners are still unsure as to where the cat has been for the past three years, their joy was evident at their reunion this month.

"It's just like a dream," Mrs Yamagishi (64), said. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
