Sailor rescued by cruise ship after days on life raft

A French sailor has been rescued by a cruise ship after spending three days adrift on a life raft in the Southern Ocean.

Alain Delord (63) had been attempting a solo round-the-world voyage when the mast of his yacht broke in fierce weather, forcing him to abandon the vessel around 500 nautical miles off Tasmania.

The cruise ship Orion answered the distress call, and made a 50-hour diversion to pick him up. Authorities had been able to drop food and water, but his location was too remote for a helicopter rescue.
