Now Tibetan nun dies in fire suicide

A Buddhist nun has become the first woman to die during a wave of suicides against Chinese rule in Tibet.

Eight Tibetan monks have already set themselves on fire this year, six in the past month, apparently in defiance of China's moves to suppress ethnic Tibetan dissent in the region. There are fears that more self-immolation protests are planned today.

Tenzin Wangmo (20) is said to have cried out for religious freedom before setting herself on fire on Monday, the London-based group Free Tibet said.

"The number of self-immolations is unprecedented," said Stephanie Brigden, the director of Free Tibet. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
