Officers were called to the Westfield mall in the northern suburb of Hornsby around noon following reports that a man was armed with a knife.

"Following a confrontation, a number of shots were fired by police.

"As a consequence, four people have sustained various injuries and have been taken to hospital," a police statement said.

Police said they did not know what caused the confrontation and declined to reveal further details or say whether the incident was terrorism-related.

Witnesses said the man was ranting and lunged at police officers before he was shot, in chaotic scenes.
