Twelve secondary students from Tullamore, Co Offaly, kept a low profile in Mumbai last night as the city was targeted for a spate of terrorists attacks.
Luckily, the students and their teachers were not staying in any of the hotels attacked by terrorists.
Concerned father Brian Jaffray said his son Daniel (15) and his classmates, along with three teachers and two past pupils, have been in Mumbai for the last two weeks on a school trip.
Mr Jaffray first heard about the attacks when he received a text message from the principal of Colaiste Choilm secondary schoo reassuring parents that everyone was safe.
"The boys weren't allowed bring their mobiles on the trip because they are supposed to immerse themselves completely in the Indian culture, so we haven't heard from Daniel in over a week," Mr Jaffray said. "We haven't heard anything, except that text message. We're in the dark here."The boys are all between 15 and 16 years old and Mr Jaffray is sure that they will be "keeping their heads down for the rest of their stay".
The students are due home tomorrow.
Their trip is part of the India Immersion volunteer programme. The boys have been working with handicapped people, drug addicts and street children during their stay, working with Mother Teresa's Missionary Sisters of Charity and the Don Bosco Religious Organisation.
