Girl, 16, dies lowering herself from window for birthday party
A SCHOOLGIRL in Hong Kong who was grounded by her parents on the night of her 16th birthday party, died when she tried to sneak out of her family's apartment to meet her friends.
Hung Hoi-wai fell to her death after tying nylon string to her waist and attempting to lower herself from a third-floor flat in the Kowloon district, the South China Morning Post reported.
The string fastened to a window frame snapped and Hung fell to the pavement in the early hours of Monday morning, suffering fatal head injuries, according to the newspaper.
She may have bounced off a drying rack outside a window before hitting the ground.
Hung's school principal told the paper she was a good student.
The Standard reported that Hung was described by her school principal as a good student with no emotional problems.
The principal, Wong Wai-ting, told the Standard that Hung had had some disputes with her family over outings when she was in Form Two, but she had received counselling and her relationship with her family had improved.
"As her academic results were above average and her discipline good, she was given an opportunity to be promoted as head of the prefect team just a few days ago," she said
