AN AUSTRALIAN dog owner was left distraught after discovering her chihuahua-Maltese cross had been eaten in its kennel by a python.

The owner went to the kennel in her back garden to let the dog run free but instead found the 8ft carpet python with a large bulge in its stomach and the dog's chain emerging from its mouth.

The owner, from the town of Lismore in rural New South Wales, called wildlife experts, who cut the chain and removed the python.

Sue Ulyatt, from the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service, said dogs typically beat local snakes in such confrontations. "It's only the second incident like this we've had in more than 10 years," Ms Ulyatt told Fairfax Media.

She said the owner should not have chained the dog up outside because it was too small to defeat the local wildlife. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
