Clothes factory blaze kills 124 in Bangladesh

At least 124 people were killed after a fire broke out at a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, a spokesman for the police has said.

"Rescue operations are still ongoing and the number of the dead may climb," Habibur Rahman, superintendent of police for Dhaka, told reporters on the scene at the industrial belt of Ashulia.

The fire started at a clothing warehouse owned by Tazreen Fashion Limited, a unit of textile manufacturing com- pany Tuba Group, Rahman said.

Tazreen Fashion Limited employs 1,200 workers and exports goods worth $36m (€27.8m) per year, mainly to the United States and Europe, according to the company's website.
