A 43-year-old Chinese man has been kept alive for 13 years by a homemade kidney dialysis machine.
Hu Songwen was diagnosed with renal failure in 1993. For six years, he visited the hospital every few days for dialysis. But each visit cost €60 and soon exhausted his family's savings.
In 1999, he built his own machine using kitchen and medical parts and a textbook.
Mr Hu said anyone "with a high school degree" should be able to do the same, but admitted that when he told doctors, "they said I was crazy". (© Daily Telegraph, London)
