Angry teenager poisons family

Police in Guyana have detained a 14-year-old girl for allegedly lacing a family meal with pesticide after her parents forbade her from dating a neighbour.

Police Commander David Ramnarine said the girl was suspected of poisoning a meal, leading to her parents and three siblings needing hospital treatment.

Ex-teacher won't face book hearing

A teacher who was sacked after she wrote a racy novel featuring some of her pupils said it was "wonderful news" that she will not have to face a hearing of the UK General Teaching Council (GTC).

Leonora Rustamova (41) -- known as Miss Rusty to her pupils at Calder High School, in West Yorkshire -- lost her job after her book detailed teenage fantasies, violence and a criminal drug den.

Citizens lend a hand for warmth

Tourism officials in the US states of Wisconsin and Michigan have ended up with nearly 3,000 pairs of mittens after a good-natured row over whose borders have the better claim to looking like a mitten.

They started the Great Lakes Mitten Campaign to gather winter clothing for charities. Thousands of people responded by dropping items off at tourist offices.

Pastor shoots own child by accident

An American pastor accidentally shot his daughter in the head while showing a handgun to a member of his congregation.

Moises Zambrana, from St Petersburg, Florida, took out the gun's magazine but did not know there was a bullet in the chamber. The gun went off and fired through a wall, hitting 20-year-old Hannah Kelley. She is critically ill.

Cowell gives lift in jet to dad-to-be

Music mogul Simon Cowell came to the rescue of a father-to-be by giving him a lift on his private jet when his girlfriend went into labour.

The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge stepped in to make sure sound recordist John Hagenstede (44) made it back to Surrey from the talent show's auditions in Edinburgh in time to see the birth of his first child.

Baby induced to meet dying father

The birth of a Texas baby has been bittersweet. Her mother, 31-year-old Diane Aulger, had her labour induced in January so her husband could see their child before he died.

Mark Aulger was diagnosed with colon cancer last April. He held his daughter Savannah for about 45 minutes after her birth and died five days later.

Man shot in pub in Manchester

The victim, named by sources as 23-year-old Mark Short, was gunned down in the Cotton Tree pub in Market Street, Droylsden, Greater Manchester shortly before 11.50pm yesterday.Three other men, believed to be related to Mr Short, were also injured and are being treated in hospital.

Giant royal family on Southbank

The largest ever photograph of the Royal Family has been displayed on a prominent South Bank building in celebration of the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee.Sea Containers, by Blackfriars Bridge, was enrobed in the giant picture measuring 100m by 70m and weighing in at nearly two tons. The image was erected by a team of eight people over 45 hours. It is due to remain in place until July.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
