Wet weather puts paid to duck race

The old saying may be that wet weather is good for ducks.

But the recent heavy downpours have led to the 14th annual Burton Latimer Duck Race in Northamptonshire being postponed.

Between 500 and 1,000 people were expected to attend the event at Pocket Park in Station Road, Burton Latimer, on Sunday.

But the organisers have taken the decision to postpone the event due to the heavy rain.

Organiser Maureen Jerram said: "It's so disappointing. Who would believe such weather for June?

"We've been assessing the situation all week and now, after yesterday's rain, the water level is 4ft too high, making it too dangerous for those people letting off the ducks.

"Access to the park is difficult too, due to the wet, so people would just get stuck in the boggy conditions.

"We're devastated as it takes months to organise but we will be running the event at a later date."

She added that they hoped to hold the race next month.

The event sees visitors bet on plastic ducks which are released on the River Ise.
