More than seven thousand people married on a single day in an Indian state under a campaign against the dowry system.
The event in Andhra Pradesh was organised by Traumata Treaty Devstaham (TTD) to help poor people who are unable to bear the expenses of marriage or offer dowries.
Many parents find it difficult to get their daughters married due to huge dowry demands by potential grooms. The organisation helped couples opposing the dowry system get married. It also organises a small party for every couple and gives them gifts.
TTD is a religious organisation working to spread awareness against the dowry system. Many girls in the country commit suicide when they see their parents struggling to get them married due to a lack of money for dowry.
In some cases, women have been murdered even after their parents pay dowry. In those cases, it is often the husbands who commit the crime after failing to extract more money from their in-laws.
K Rosaiah, the chief minister of the state, was among those who hailed the event against the dowry system.
