UK wardrobe is a load of pants
The average Briton owns 18 pairs of underwear but just one suit, and almost a quarter do not own any nightwear, according to a survey.
They own 17 pairs of socks, 14 T-shirts and three pairs of shorts, fewer than their European counterparts, the Cotton USA Global Lifestyle Monitor (GLM) found.
The average British adult owns 1.4 suits, while the average Italian has three, and the average British woman owns nine bras compared with 12 in Italy.
The study suggests the British are more likely to sleep naked - or in day clothes - than their European counterparts, with 23% not owning any nightwear.
However Britons own three more pairs of underwear than they did since the survey was last carried out two years ago.
The Germans own the most underwear - an average of 23 pairs - and 24 pairs of socks.
British wardrobes have decreased by an average of 11 garments since 2012, with 61% of people claiming to donate unused clothing to charity.
Cotton USA spokeswoman Stephanie Thiers-Ratcliffe said: "The GLM report always brings some interesting and sometimes surprising results, giving lots to talk about when it comes to the different clothing habits of European countries."
