Sohaib Athar, an IT consultant living in Abbottabad, posted regular updates of helicopters swarming overhead and a "window-shaking bang", before writing: "Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it."

Mr Athar, believed to be living near to bin Laden's compound, wrote his first tweet at about 9pm on Sunday night, when he noticed a helicopter.

He then wrote: "A huge window-shaking bang here in Abbottabad Cantt. I hope it's not the start of something nasty."

He later added: "Since Taliban (probably) don't have helicopters, and since they're saying it was not 'ours', so must be a complicated situation."

The realisation hit him at about 6am on Monday as he wrote: "Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it."

Under his username @ReallyVirtual, he later added: "Interesting, I didn't think my name would trend on Twitter before releasing a couple of rock albums and a few award-winning software."
