Samsung introducing virtual reality exhibition at the British Museum

Samsung is taking virtual reality to the British Museum to show historical artefacts in their native settings.

Visitors will be able to try on a virtual reality headset and explore a traditional roundhouse from the Bronze Age, complete with 3D scans of objects found in the museum.

Virtual Reality Weekend on Saturday and Sunday will see Samsung provide Gear VR headsets so younger visitors can experience the Bronze Age in an immersive way.

As well as the headsets, Samsung's Digital Discovery Centre will also have tablets for visitors, as well as a fulldome - a giant interactive touchscreen that enables users to examine 360-degree 3D scans of the objects, with include a knife and gold bracelets.

Chris Michaels, head of digital publishing at the museum said: "The British Museum is constantly looking for new opportunities to innovate in the digital space. We are extremely excited to partner with Samsung on this virtual reality project.

"It gives us the chance to create an amazing new context for objects in our collection, exploring new interpretations for our Bronze Age objects. We can't wait to share it with our visitors."

As well as this trial, a schools programme will begin in the autumn which will bring in Key Stage 2 students, aged seven to 11, who study the Bronze Age as part of the national curriculum. Samsung hopes pupils will become more engaged with the subject.

The firm's UK and Ireland president Andy Griffiths said: "Samsung is delighted to partner with the British Museum on its first virtual reality visitor experience. Together, our aim is to use the latest technologies to enhance learning and provide children and adults alike with an immersive learning experience like no other.

"We're excited to see visitors delving into Bronze Age history in an immersive fulldome and through our Gear VR headsets and tablets. This will be a completely new way to interact with the British Museum's collection."
