Thousands of babies were named Robert in the wake of the 1966 World Cup after stellar performances by Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton.

The names of England's football World Cup squad could double in popularity if they win the tournament, according to a new study.

Research by family history website Ancestry.co.uk showed a surge in boys being named after the successful 1966 team.

There were an extra 8,500 Roberts born in 1966 - many named after Sir Bobby Charlton - and many more Alans and Rogers.

Ancestry.co.uk marketing manager Russell James said: "England's Lions really can make a name for themselves this summer."
