Two people have been arrested after a burglary which ruined a man's surprise plan to propose to his girlfriend when thieves stole the engagement ring.
Jason Lyon ended up asking Nicola Waites to marry him as they sat in the back of a police van while scenes-of-crime officers dusted their home in The Wynd, Pelton, County Durham, for fingerprints.
Mr Lyon, 20, bought the £330 diamond ring and planned to propose on New Year's Eve, but his romantic idea was ruined by burglars whose break-in was discovered on Boxing Day.
A Durham Police spokeswoman said: "Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident. A 30-year-old woman from Pelton was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and a 33-year-old man from Pelton on suspicion of burglary.
"They are both being held at Durham City police station for questioning."
Mr Lyon said the proposal to his 21-year-old fiancee was successful, despite the unusual circumstances.
He said: "She said yes and then got quite emotional. It was a mixture of joy and upset and stress."
The engagement ring has not yet been recovered, police said.
