Police have launched an inquiry after a submerged 1982 Ford Capri was spotted in a rowing lake at the National Water Sports Centre.
The algae-covered car was recovered from the 2km Regatta Lake at Holme Pierrepoint, near Nottingham, last week after its discovery during a routine weed inspection.
Officers believe the coupe, which was acting as a makeshift "home" for four eels, had been in the lake for several years.
Detective Sergeant Nick Sawdon, who was involved in the recovery operation, said: "It was a surprise to find it was an old Ford Capri that was actually blue underneath all the growth on it.
"It was half full of sand so we had to use lifting bags and winches to recover it.
"We're still trying to find out why the car was there. I suspect it was stolen but it might have been there for so long that we'll never know."
