MPs are thanking police and the public for their messages as the lockdown in Westminster continues

The incident is being treated by Scotland Yard as terror related.

As the major incident continues to develop outside Westminster and the area remains on police lockdown, staff inside Parliament have been told to stay inside their offices.

Many MPs have taken to Twitter to thank the police for their work.

Several have also thanked the public for sending them messages about their safety.

A policeman has been stabbed and his attacker shot by officers in the major incident which Scotland Yard is treating as terror related.

The attacker also mowed down several pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before crashing a vehicle into railings then running through the gates of the Palace of Westminster and stabbing the officer.

Eyewitnesses said he was shot by police as he approached a second officer clutching his knife.
