MP gives belt to trouser-fall mayor
Labour MP Keith Vaz has sent a belt to a lord mayor whose trousers fell down during a visit to a local library.
Colin Hall, Lord Mayor of Leicester, suffered the embarrassing wardrobe malfunction on a visit to Southfields library in the city.
The mishap occurred because the mayor had gone on a diet and lost weight, it was reported.
He had not been wearing a belt at the time.
But Leicester East MP Mr Vaz, who has known the mayor since he was a teenager, sent him a black leather one afterwards, to help him avoid a repeat of the sartorial accident.
Mr Hall was a guest at a "Summer Showcase" organised by Global Education Leicester/Shire - a network which works with teachers and education institutions to promote understanding of global perspectives - when his trouser troubles struck.
He offered his "deepest apologies" for anyone who might have been offended when the clothing came loose and fell down at the event - which ended up showcasing far more than was intended.
A city council spokesman said: "The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Colin Hall, attended a function at a local library where he suffered an unfortunate problem with his trousers.
"He was not wearing a belt and the trousers came loose and fell.
"The Lord Mayor has offered his deepest apologies to those attending the event for any offence caused by the accident."
