The M6 was closed briefly in both directions between Junction 17 for Sandbach and Junction 18 for Holmes Chapel in Cheshire after the animal wandered onto the northbound lanes at around 2.30pm.

Cheshire Police tweeted: "Horse currently loose on the M6 North Bound (sic) near to junction 17. Please take care Highways are dealing."

It then updated to say the horse had been secured and the block on traffic lifted around 20 minutes later.
