Home owners are spending millions of pounds a year to salvage DIY "disasters", according to new research.
Home improvement blunders include painting, installing kitchen cabinets or garden landscaping, said the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).
A survey of almost 2,000 householders found that one in five admitted home improvement projects had been a disaster.
Almost a third had called in tradespeople to fix or finish a job, costing an extra £871, it was estimated.
