A soldier parachuting from a helicopter followed by the sound of gunfire and explosions - locals could be forgiven for thinking an invasion was under way.
But the people of east London were not under attack.
Instead members of the Royal Artillery's Black Knights parachute display team were taking part in an open evening held by the Territorial Army.
Onlookers were shocked and awed by the demonstration in the skies above City Road in east London.
And Twitter was soon buzzing with speculation as to what was going on.
ChloeCulpan wrote: "Did just panic slightly hearing about gun-fire, explosions & someone parachuting from a Chinook in e. London - turns out it was all for ent!"
And Mike Brear posted: "Such a fantastic idea to hold a Royal Artillery event in Shoreditch with helicopters and gunfire. Not likely to freak everyone out at all."
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "This was just a normal military demonstration.
"The Honourable Artillery Company is a well-known regiment in the vicinity."
The Territorial Army's Honourable Artillery Company is based in Finsbury Barracks on City Road.
