A man allegedly rang police telling them he had stolen a 44-tonne digger, sparking a pursuit involving a helicopter.

The large four-wheeled machine, which towered above pursuing police cars, was eventually halted on the A511 at Coalville, near Leicester, in the early hours.

Leicestershire Police, who tweeted a picture of the yellow and black construction vehicle stopped at the roadside, said no-one was injured during the incident.

A police helicopter was deployed to help track the digger.

A spokesman for the force said: "Police were called at 3.14am today by a man who claimed to have stolen a 44-tonne digger from the Coalville area."

Officers added that a 22-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident and remains in custody.
