A man selling fruits and vegetables in the street allegedly attacked a woman after she refused to buy an avocado from him, police in the US Virgin Islands said.

Police said in a statement that 50-year-old Keith Richardson threatened the woman with a knife and then pushed her to the ground after she declined his offer.

The St Thomas resident was arrested and charged with assault.

He remains in jail on a 25,000 US dollar bond following the incident.
