Royal Mail has delivered a number of letters nearly two decades after they were sent, it was disclosed.
The missing mail, dating from 1991, was found at a house that was being renovated.
Royal Mail could not say how many letters were found, but confirmed that residents in three streets in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, were delivered their mail 19 years after it had been posted.
A spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it."
The case will be investigated and the postman or woman responsible for the mail's disappearance may face prosecution.
