Locals come together to celebrate the slightly unexpected mix of St George and asparagus

By Jessica Pitocchi

It’s the start of asparagus season, don’t you know?

If you didn’t know the connection between St George’s Day and asparagus, you certainly weren’t alone.

But as well as today being a day of celebration for our patron saint, it also marks the start of British asparagus season.

People came to celebrate both at the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, Worcestershire which has been hosting the event for more than 10 years.

There were drinks, Morris dancing, England flags flapping in the wind and, of course, plenty of the green stuff.

Whoever knew eating asparagus could be so patriotic?
