Thought hover technology was science-fiction? Think again, because Lexus has created a working hoverboard.

Fans of sci-fi franchise Back To The Future will remember Marty McFly riding a hoverboard in the second of the three much-loved films produced in the 1980s.

But in 2015 Lexus has worked with experts in "super-conductive technology" to create a hoverboard that uses magnetic levitation with superconductors cooled by liquid nitrogen - the same substance used to freeze the T-1000 Terminator in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Mark Templin, executive vice president at Lexus International, said: "At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible.

"That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the hoverboard project. It's the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination."

The board has been designed with Lexus styling cues, including the spindle grille, but it won't be for sale at any price.

The firm is set to test the hoverboard next month in Barcelona, as part of its Amazing in Motion project, which Lexus says is "an international showcase for the brand's creativity and innovation".
