A solid gold Lego brick is expected to sell for more than £12,000 under the hammer.

The 25.65g brick - made of 14-carat gold - will be sold through the online auction house Catawiki on Wednesday.

It is currently selling for more than £7,000 on the auction site and bidding will close at 8.30pm.

The brick - which is the same size as the original 2x4 Lego brick - was one of a number gifted by Lego between 1979 and 1981 to specially selected business partners and employees who had worked for the company for 25 years.

There are thought to be just 10 of the bricks in existence and a similar brick was sold for almost 14,000 US dollars (more than £11,000) nearly five years ago.

Aldus Rolf Nagtzaam, from Catawiki, said: "The brick has been put up for auction by a family member of an Italian business partner of Lego who received the brick in 1980, for his work on building the Lego market in Italy."
