A 29-year old man with hepatitis C has been charged with attempted murder after he spat on a hospital worker in the US.

A prisons official said Andre LaFrance was being held in solitary confinement and on suicide watch at the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer, Alaska.

Sgt Walter Erickson said LaFrance was "very very unstable".

Charges filed against him also include harassment.

State troopers were called on Monday morning after the assault at Mat-Su Regional Medical Centre. Troopers said LaFrance "intentionally transferred a dangerous bodily fluid" on to the worker.
