Harvard students create their own Dumbledore's Army to counter Donald Trump
The students want to “transform our country to better reflect our shared values”.
A group of students from Harvard University have created a “resistance school” to counter US President Donald Trump’s agenda and policy changes.
Following Trump’s inauguration in January, nearly a dozen students from the John F Kennedy School of Government gathered to discuss what the new presidency meant for the future of the country.
The Resistance School website reads: “On November 8, we lost more than just the presidency. We lost yet more ground in the decades-long campaign against progressive values.
Resistance School is a free four-week practical
Resistance School is a free four-week practical training program that will sharpen the tools we need to fight back at the federal, state, and local levels. Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action.
“Republicans now control the Senate, House, and more state legislatures than they have in almost 200 years. Those losses have emboldened the right to launch an all-out attack against our nation’s creed – that all are created equal.
“Like so many Americans, the election moved us – a group of progressive graduate students at Harvard – to ask ourselves: How can we most effectively fight Trump’s agenda?”
Their answer was the Resistance School: a free, month-long training programme that will teach others how to counter decisions they feel strongly opposed to at federal, state and local level.
“Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action.”
The Resistance School consists of four interactive workshops in which people will learn to:
1. Communicate values in political advocacy
2. Mobilise and organise communities
3. Structure and build capacity for action
4. Sustain the resistance long term
The Resistance School likens itself to Dumbledore’s Army from the Harry Potter books, a secret organisation of students who teach themselves to combat dark magic.
It consists of former staff from the Barack Obama, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton presidential election campaigns, community organisers, human rights advocates and journalists.

While the Resistance School is formed by students, it’s not actually affiliated with the John F Kennedy School of Government or Harvard University.
More than 5,700 people have already signed up for the workshops, which will be hosted on campus and live-streamed on Facebook.
