It's not unusual for a cat to get a hairball, but a 400lb tiger needed help from vets when he could not cough up a football-sized fur lump by himself.

The 17-year-old tiger named Ty underwent surgery at a veterinary centre in the Tampa Bay community of Clearwater, Florida, where doctors said they safely removed the 4lb obstruction from his stomach.

The tiger, cared for by Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Florida, was brought to vets after not eating for nearly two weeks. Doctors said they detected the hairball using a scope with a camera.

Vernon Yates, whose non-profit group regularly helps law enforcement agencies with seized animals, said he was thankful the hairball was removed and added that Ty was now feline fine.
