A hand grenade found lying by the kurb of a street in New York has been removed using a robot, police say.
A pedestrian spotted the explosive in Long Island and called 911, a Nassau County Police Department spokesman said.
The grenade, which had the pin in it, was discovered near a Long Island Railroad overpass in South Farmingdale, which is about 39 miles east of Manhattan.
The police spokesman said detectives with the arson bomb squad removed the grenade by using a robot, which put the device in a special container.
He said eventually the grenade will be detonated in a remote area. Police are investigating who might have owned the explosive.
