George Osborne made a terrible John Lewis-related pun about new West Midlands mayor Andy Street
Street used to be the big boss of the shopping store.
Andy Street, the ex-John Lewis boss turned Conservative candidate, has been elected as the West Midlands mayor.
He surprised a lot of people when he gave up his business career last year to stand for the newly-created mayoral post.
But his high-profile election campaign, as well as his pledge that the region will make a success of Brexit, saw him take the win to oversee an £8 billion investment budget.
Another man in a new position, Evening Standard editor George Osborne, took the opportunity to tweet his thoughts – and made a not-so-subtle pun relating to the shopping giant’s slogan.
Congratulations to Andy Street & Andy Burnham, two new metro mayors. Difficult to knowingly undersell significance of @andy4wm win - wow— George Osborne (@George_Osborne) May 5, 2017
Oh dear – well, he is in the newspaper industry now.
George Osborne is tweeting rubbish puns. I think that makes him a proper journalist now.— Jane Merrick (@janemerrick23) May 5, 2017
