Officials said Keith Gruber, of Swan Lake in New York, also had four unopened beer cans in his bag when he tried to walk through the metal detector at the courthouse.

The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports that Judge Frank LaBuda asked the 49-year-old if he enjoyed his "liquid lunch". Gruber said he did, then said he was sorry.

The judge revoked his bail and sent him to jail.

Gruber was arrested in December and was free on bail of 30,000 US dollars (£18,300).

The judge also dismissed Gruber's court-appointed lawyer because Gruber refused to co-operate with him.
