An elderly couple had a lucky escape when a runaway car plunged through their conservatory.

In a freak accident, the Nissan Almera rolled backwards off a driveway, through a neighbour's fence and over a garden pond, before smashing into the house, according to recovery crews.

Sam Burke, of Burke Brothers Recovery, said he and colleagues arrived at the address in Hall Lane, Bilston, West Midlands, last night.

"I had a ring from the office about 9.30pm, and they said, 'There's a car in a house'," said the 22-year-old.

"I said, 'In a house?', and they said, 'Yes'.

"When I got there, it was obviously night time, and me and the lads were thinking, 'where is it?'. We couldn't see it to start with.

"It had gone down the hill, right through a fence, over a pond and then into the conservatory."

Mr Burke and his colleagues went into the house to find a slightly shaken elderly couple in their dressing gowns, who had been getting ready for bed when the car hit.

"Nobody was hurt," said Mr Burke.

"There was an elderly couple and they said they had been in the conservatory a bit earlier, but were heading up to bed when it happened.

"They were a bit shocked but they seemed pretty calm about it."

Mr Burke and his team, based in Wolverhampton, had to place supports throughout the conservatory to make it safe, and soaked up leaking petrol.

They were then able to slowly winch the car back out through the hole it had made in the fence, and on to a recovery truck.

Mr Burke added: "The recovery (of the car) will cost a few hundred quid, but I don't know how much the conservatory will be to fix."
