Around half of these "big kids" are quite happy to play in the company of adults, the poll by car company Honda found.

Based on responses from 2,044 UK adults, the survey also showed that 29% hold on to the toy models they had as a child, with 10% hiding their treasured possessions away.

Nearly 7% put their collection on display, while 13% have received a toy car as a gift as an adult, with 6% without such a present wishing they had been given one.

The survey showed that 24% admitted to being excited when buying a toy car as a gift because it brought back happy childhood memories, while 21% had received hand-me-down toys from other family members.

Also, 21% were happy to offer their own toys as hand-me-downs, but 3.4% wished they had not done so and the same number refused to part with their toy.

Earlier this year, trade magazine Toy News published the result of a poll which put racing-car set Scalextric at number four in a list of the greatest toys of all time. In eighth place was car toy company Matchbox.
