A dog-walking pedestrian strayed onto the hard shoulder of an urban motorway after getting lost, police have said.

The man, thought to be travelling from Ireland to London, was taken to a place of safety this afternoon by officers patrolling the A38(M) in Birmingham.

In a series of pun-filled messages on its Twitter feed, the Central Motorway Police Group said the pedestrian was found at 1.45pm.

A picture taken by an in-car camera posted by the CMPG on Twitter showed the dog-owner stooping over his pet near a crash barrier.

In its final tweet on the incident, the CMPG said: "We helped the man and his dog get to a safe location so he can continue on his journey. Genuine mistake."
