Bale wins most extreme role poll
Award-winning Christian Bale has been named the movie star who has suffered most for his art.
He topped a poll among film fans for the most extreme movie role after he lost 62lb and stopped sleeping to prepare for The Machinist.
Robert De Niro's efforts to pile on 60lb for Raging Bull - which halted production for four months - was second in the poll by DVD rental and streaming service Lovefilm.
Bale, who picked up a Screen Actors Guild award for supporting actor in The Fighter at the weekend, is usually known for his strapping physique.
But the Haverfordwest-born star - who has twice played Batman on screen - became a scrawny shadow of himself for The Machinist in 2004, eating barely anything for several months.
Third place went to glamorous star Charlize Theron, who gorged on junk food and looked almost unrecognisable for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster.
Daniel Day-Lewis was fourth for the hours he spent in character while playing quadriplegic Christy Brown in My Left Foot.
The star stayed in character for hours on end and often had to be carried around on-set, or pushed in a wheelchair.
Tom Hanks was fifth for Cast Away, production for which was halted to allow the actor to lose 55lb and grow his hair and a beard.
