Avalanches cut off city in Alaska

Multiple avalanches that crossed the Richardson Highway in the Thompson Pass region of Valdez, Alaska (AP/Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities)

Avalanches have cut off an Alaska city and the only highway in could be closed for at least a week, if not much longer, officials said.

Several snow slides hit the area near Valdez last week, the Alaska Department of Transportation said.

One slide dammed the Lowe River in Keystone Canyon, causing water to flood the Richardson Highway.

The only roadway to the city of 4,100 people will be closed until further notice, the department said.
