More than 40% of women have never had their bra fitted, according to a new survey.

Research carried out by Rigby & Peller, the royal warrant holding company which supplies the Queen's lingerie, found that 80% of women in the UK are wearing the wrong sized bra.

It discovered that 34% have not bought a new bra in the past 12 months, more than two-thirds (71%) have been up to five different sizes in adulthood and 43% have never been professionally measured for their underwear.

The firm found that 30% were unhappy with their bust.

It also quizzed both men and women about their favourite female shapes, with the 50s hourglass coming top, while the waif look of the 90s polled only 3%.

Screen icon Marilyn Monroe was the most admired celebrity silhouette with 31% of votes, while Kelly Brook came a close second with 30% in the survey of 2,000 women and 435 men.

Rigby & Peller's June Kenton, who became Grantee of Royal Warrant as Corsetiere to the Queen in 1982, said: "Breast sizes have increased significantly over the past 50 years with an increase in demand for smaller back sizes, however there is a common misconception that only large breasted ladies need to be concerned about a well fitted bra.

"No matter their size or shape we want women to understand how dramatically they can improve their quality of life and general wellbeing by having a bra that is properly fitted and well made - it is staggering how many women stick to one size throughout their lifetime."

In August, the family-run company sold an 87% stake to Belgian bra-maker Van de Velde for £8 million.
