Woman allegedly stabs to death expectant mother before cutting baby from womb
The alleged murderer of a young pregnant mother was found clutching a child apparently cut from the victim’s womb, New York police revealed.
The 22-year-old victim - who detectives said appeared to have been pregnant - was found with multiple stab wounds to the torso in a house in the Bronx, New York City.
Another woman – named locally as Ashley Wade following her arrest - was clutching a blood stain newborn baby and told emergency services that she had given birth during the dispute.
It is understood that the baby is currently being cared for at a Bronx-area hospital.
The grisly case has shocked local authorities in the US state and investigators said they were still trying to work out what happened during the assault.
New York City councilman Andy King said police were still trying to work out who was the mother of the child but said it appeared likely that the child belonged to the 22-year-old victim and had been “crudely” removed by the alleged perpetrator.
“It appears that the foetus of this woman was surgically removed,” Mr King said after being briefed by the police.
“When the cops arrived, the perpetrator tried to claim that it was her child that was there, and saying that she gave birth at the time of the struggle.
“This is an ugly incident that cannot be condoned.”
According to the New York Post, when police first arrived at the scene the placenta and umbilical cord from the murdered woman was lying on the floor.
They found Ms Wade standing over the body, insisting that the blood-soaked baby was hers.
“It’s my baby!” she allegedly told police.
The police were called to Ms Wade’s home at around 2:20 pm by her boyfriend, who is believed to have walked in on the aftermath of the grisly slaying.
Authorities are now seeking a search warrant to test whether Ms Wade is the mother of the child, authorities said.
